Lanternwalk / Prairie Night Light / Martinmas
It is that time of the year again! Our 7th annual Lantern Walk / Prairie Night Light / Martinmas is happening this Saturday Nov. 4th:
This is your chance to shine! Join our lantern-lit procession winding through Wascana Park. A community partnership event between New Dance Horizons, Das Schulhaus, and Buffalo People Arts Institute, hosted by Saskatchewan Science Centre. The custom of carrying lanterns is rooted in the fact that “light needs to be brought into the darker times of the year” like many other festivals of lights traditions seen around the world.
All welcome. (No need to pre-register.) Please come a little early to light up!

MORE BACKGROUND INFO:
The Lantern Walk originates from the German tradition of the St. Martin’s procession which commemorates the life of St. Martin of Tours. Martin is best known for sharing his cloak with a beggar during a snowstorm. While the procession take their origin from a religious practice today they are strongly secular. Following the tradition of the St. Martin Processions also called Martinmas the procession we take a walk with our Lanterns through Wascana Park. (not far) The custom of carrying lanterns is rooted in the fact that “light needs to be brought into the darker times of the year” like many other festivals of lights traditions seen around the world. NDH and Das Schulhaus offered a lantern making workshop during culture day weekend 2017. You can also bring your own lanterns. Lanterns will be carried by proud little hands through the early evening into the night. This year’s Lantern Making theme was Prairie Animals. We invited Buffalo People to join us in this event. They complete our circle by connecting our theme and our heritage to the Prairie, the Prairie animals and the people who have been living on this land since time immemorial. Different cultures come together at one event. We cordially invite you to join Das Schulhaus, New Dance Horizons, and Buffalo People to our Prairie Night Light, where the lanterns we carry will bring light to the dark season of the year.
