Reel to Real Anti-racism Film Festival: Peace by Chocolate

Welcome back to the Reel to Real film festival, where we mark the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination by coming together as a community to learn and grow. March 21st is a day for us to stand up and reject racism, discrimination and hatred. We believe that eliminating racism in our communities is possible, and that the best path to success is through intercultural education and entertainment.

This March 21st, we will meet at 6 pm at the Roxy Theatre for a viewing of Peace by Chocolate (2021). Peace by Choclate is based on the true story of the Hadhad famliy, a refugee family from Syria. It describes their experiences first arriving in Canada, finding a new home in the community of Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Issam Hadhad creates a small-scale artisanal chocolate shop, whose chocolates quickly become the talk of the town, and even the country. The film explores the challenges of the refugee experience and how the goals of different generations of newcomers might differ. Peace by Chocolate is a joyous celebration of refugee success and is a wonderful film for families to enjoy!

Following the film, we will take part in a discussion panel, exploring the experiences of refugees and immigrants to Canada through a Saskatchewan lens. Details about our panelists will be added in the coming weeks.

This is a chance to learn, to share a joyful experience together in intercultural community, and to strengthen our resolve in the work of anti-racism!
